same flower on the museum/memorial grounds of the Kaiten

Ohzu Shima (Ohzu Island) - former Kaiten base

*Kaiten were the kamikazes of the sea during WWII. Young men were specially trained to steer these modified missiles (midget submarines with a warhead at the tip weighing over 3,000 pounds) into enemy targets, thereby destroying themselves with the enemy. Deguchi No Nai Umi (Sea Without Exit, a 2004 Japanese film) is an excellent source on the topic.
